VERDICT: False
A WhatsApp message has been forwarded claiming that the presidential results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission do not add up to 100% but 103%.
The claim reads, “@ZECzim break the world record of pple who have voted
ZANU PF 52,6℅
CCC 44℅
Other parties 6,4℅
Totally 103℅ 😂😂😂
Just a clear sing of rigged election
@SADC_News ,@CCCZimbabwe”
The electoral body responded in a post on Facebook here and also shared on their X, formerly known as Twitter, page here.
In an apparently sarcastic response the electoral body responded with, “Take your time and add the numbers, they add up to 100%. Check your Maths, Thank you”
There was no mention of who or what the body was responding to.
However, the picture accompanying the post had ineligible text that was not clear enough for users to ‘take their time and add up’, a fact users were quick to point out here, here and here.
The electoral body initially announced the presidential results on the night of 26 August 2023 and shortly thereafter, shared a picture of the official results.
This picture, a clearer one, does show that the numbers do add up to 100%, and not 103% as claimed.
Conclusion
The claim that ZEC announced results that add up to 103% has been rated as false since the original post from ZEC shows that the figures do add up to 100%.
